Gabriel

Gabriel Salazar Vergara (born 31 January 1936) is a Chilean historian. His country is well-known due to his studies of sociology and his analysis of political movements. Particularly, he was prominent in the student protests of 2011-12 and 2006. Salazar was born to the poorest of families. He attended Universidad de Chile and studied the fields of sociology, philosophy and historical studies. In addition, he was an assistant to Mario Gongora and Hector Herrera Cajas the famous historian. [1] Salazar was a member of the Revolutionary Left Movement until 1973. 2] In 1973, he was tortured in Villa Grimaldi by the military. After his release from the military prison camp He fled to England. There he was given an award of scholarship which allowed him to further study at University of Hull. He earned an PhD on Economic and Social History from that university in the year 1984. The following year, he returned to Chile. Salazar was able to make a breakthrough 1985. This is still relatively not well-known. He studied peons as well laborers and proletarians. 1 Salazar is one of the founders of the historiographic movement known by the name of Nueva Historia Social. Salazar sees history as an instrument to encourage actions of society. Interview: Salazar said that he was a "leftist social historian, critical" and he rejected the term "Marxist".
